Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche died after being stabbed.

"They fearlessly risked their lives for two young women who were threatened by an act of bigotry and terror".

Another crowdfunding campaign to support the two slain men, launched by a man named Nick Zukin, has raised close to $500,000 and a third campaign to pay for Fletcher's recovery has raised more than $220,000.

But according to his mother Mary, her son must have been "on drugs or something".

Mangum told news station KPTV that she and her 17-year-old friend were riding the train when Christian started yelling at them.

Police and witnesses said the victims were defending two teen girls who were the focus of Christian's tirade. "You're talking about hundreds of people showing up in the park with no leadership, no voice of reason", he said in a Facebook post.

"Well said, Mr. President", Pence tweeted.

Ahead of today's tweet, there had been mounting calls for President Trump to comment on and condemn the attack.

The president said in a tweet Monday that the three stabbing victims stood up to hate and intolerance, and the attack was unacceptable.

The actions of the men who went to help the 16-year-old have sparked admiration and praise from around the world.

Police say Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, of Portland was also stabbed and is in serious condition at a Portland hospital. Then a stranger stepped in and told the assailant he couldn't "disrespect these young ladies like that", she said. "You know, basically say that he denounces these kinds of attackers and these kinds of upticks in domestic terrorist incidents... and unfortunately, we just heard pin-drop silence", said Chaudry.

The homicide detective investigating the attack said in court documents that surveillance and cellphone video showed Christian cutting the three victims with a knife. Whether authorities will pursue hate crime charges is yet unknown, but politicians and others quickly condemned the attack.

"The president contextualizes Muslims as foreigners and as national security threats, and it seems his hostility toward American Muslims is promoting this narrative of hate that led to the stabbings in OR", said Robert McCaw, a top official with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Lawyers for the public defender's office appeared in court on his behalf.

Hours before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on May 26, Jeremy Joseph Christian began shouting ethnic and religious slurs at two young women while aboard a commuter train.

Portland police spokesman Pete Simpson confirmed that the man in the KOIN video is Christian.

Jeremy Christian, said to be a white supremacist, has been charged with with two counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder over the stabbings.

"He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia and that we shouldn't be here and to get out of his country", said Destinee Mangum, who was on the train with a friend wearing a Muslim head scarf. Wheeler urged organizers to cancel a "Trump free speech rally" in Portland and other similar events next weekend, saying they were inappropriate and could be risky.
