Carlsson upstages big guns at Wentworth

In this week's KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Trump National, it wouldn't be far-fetched to also call the 1991 PGA Champion and 1995 Open Champion a potential tournament favorite.

Els appeared to have chipped in for an eagle on the par-5 12th hole, but instantly realized he had replaced his ball in wrong spot after checking to see if it was plugged.

Francesco Molinari has been four times inside the top ten in his last five starts at Wentworth and his impressive 6th place finish at the Players Championship suggests his game is in good enough shape to continue his good run in this event.

"I pulled my second shot a bit left and hit it into the bank of the bunker", Els explained. I feel like it's just a driver that I can control and hit straighter than anything I've hit since probably the 540 back when I won with TaylorMade at Torrey Pines. One year, 2004, I think I led the stats in putting, but other than that I was always at best maybe 70th. "I know deep down the ball wasn't quite where it should be and I wouldn't be able to live with myself".

Poulter has previously made no secret of his dislike for Wentworth, especially after the controversial redesign by Ernie Els in 2010.

"I'm personally very pleased that it has been changed and because of that, I am extremely excited to go out there and play tomorrow because I would love to walk out of Wentworth Golf Club and say 'I absolutely love it.'" One of the biggest upgrades is to the greens which have all been relaid. We have played on I think six or seven events have all been on Bermuda.

"The first year, before everything settles in, there are a lot of little breaks and I had a hard time finding the right lines early on but I got a couple in on the back nine and kept it pretty tidy", said the Swede. The renovation started eight days after Chris Wood's victory a year ago, with all 18 greens stripped and reseeded.

Four greens - the 8th, 11th, 14th and 16th were completely rebuilt while the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 13th and 15th greens were partially rebuilt.

Also at five-under is Scott Jamieson who carded a bogey-free 67 which was matched by Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Carlsson missed six successive cuts on the European Tour from February to April, but has hinted at a return to form with top-25 finishes at his last two events.

"There's been some criticism on social media but that's my decision and if you're not happy with it that's your problem", said the Belgian, who won a record four points on his Ryder Cup debut at Hazeltine a year ago. So with that in mind I'm hoping for a strong showing from the home boys this week, with Tommy Fleetwood leading my fancies.

However, that shot was soon given back at the sixth before another bogey on the eighth saw the two-time Ryder Cup player heading for the turn at one over.

Two-time victor here Luke Donald was struggling at two-over par for the front nine after a double bogey on the ninth.
