Mamma Mia! was so popular that, at the time of its release, it was the highest grossing film in United Kingdom history.
Universal has announced that it is officially moving forward on a sequel to the film version of the Broadway mega-hit Mamma Mia!
The film is slated to feature songs out of the ABBA catalog that weren't used in the original film (there's no lack of material there to draw from), but the studio statement also says, "along with some reprised favorites".
And, if you were anxious about the sequel repeating some of ABBAs iconic hits, those producing the film have promised to build a whole new soundtrack from the extensive number of ABBA hits. Ten years after the musical Mamma Mia! The soundtrack of the movie has been certified platinum in over 20 countries.More news: Oil prices drop as market remains bloated despite OPEC efforts
The original film starred Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper and Christine Baranski.
Though no official casting announcements have been made, it's likely that most (perhaps even all) of the original members will be back again for the sequel.
They've brought in Judy Craymer, who produced Mamma Mia! Also returning are lyrical and music supervisors Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeu, acting as executive producers as well.
