Graduate student Emily Durgin highlights the crop of talent competing for the Huskies at the University of Kentucky from next Thursday, May 25 to Saturday, May 27. The two NCAA preliminary meets, divided between the east and the west, provide an opportunity for the top-12 finishers in each event at each site to qualify for the national championship meet.
Detloff, a native of Elk River, Minn., won the Big Sky Conference championship in the discus last week but her NCAA Preliminary mark occurred on March 17 at Charleston Southern, when she recorded a throw of 178 feet, 3 inches (54.33 meters).
Ortiz will make her third appearance at a regional meet following a school-record breaking performance in Houston that earned her a silver medal in the javelin. The time was her fastest outdoors and her second-fastest overall in a race during the collegiate season. The East Region will take place in Lexington, Ky. while the West Region will take place in Austin, Texas. Piccirillo was a second team All-American in the event in both 2014 and 2015, and has a lifetime best mark of 4:13.49 which was recorded at Stanford two years ago.

Phelan is in search of first team All-America honors at 1,500 meters for the second consecutive season after an eighth-place finish at NCAAs a year ago.
Tulane will also be represented in the men's competition by Emmanuel Rotich in the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m as well as Raymond Kibet in the 400m dash. She now holds the school record in the 100m hurdles on a quick time of 13.37 and broke a conference meet record last weekend in the 400m hurdles, finishing in just 57.82. Although she will be competing at the NCAA East Preliminary for the first time, Hutchinson has run the 1500 meters at big meets before.
Durgin, who was named Co-Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer at the AAC Championships, will compete in the 5000m and 10,000m runs at the NCAA's.
Burda will run in the national semifinal heat of the 10000 meters on May 25 at 9 p.m.
