Ford CarPlay is Here for 2016 Models Via Software Update

The automaker's 2016 model-year line will be eligible for an infotainment center software upgrade that will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving drivers a better connection with their phones while they're on the road.

To get the update over-the-air, a Ford SYNC 3-equipped vehicle must have Wi-Fi compatibility and automatic system updates enabled.

As a factory-installed, integrated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system, Ford SYNC allows users to make hands-free telephone calls, control music and perform other functions with the use of voice commands. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, the dealership can also update the system for you.

"Customers with Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles and a Wi-Fi network can set up their vehicle to receive the update automatically".

The OTA update option is also a big step for Ford - it's the company's first for software, and it's one of the major reasons that Ford recently hired around 400 new mobile smartphone engineers, the company tells me.

"Our SYNC 3 software platform was created to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, [functionality] and security enhancements", says Ford Executive Director of Connected Vehicle and Services Don Butler. CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or later, and running iOS 7.1 or later.

Ford vehicle owners can download a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, use USB, or visit their dealer. "With over-the-air updates, we can deliver new features to customers in the background while they continue using their vehicles".

Or download the update from this website and install it with a USB drive. Android Auto requires Android 5.0 devices or higher.

Ford is offering Android Auto and Apple CarPlay software to many of its customers who missed out on the technology. And SYNC 3 is created to perform the update as long as Wi-Fi is connected prior to the vehicle turning off, therefore there is no need to keep the vehicle running for the update to take place.
