"Bob Mueller is a great choice to lead the investigation as the newly appointed special counsel", Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, said in a statement. He did not offer any evidence of such acts in his reference to former Democratic President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Rosenstein had the responsibility of deciding to appoint a special counsel because Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a former surrogate for the Trump campaign, has recused himself from decisions on the issue.

In statement released by the White House on Wednesday evening, the President was measured in his response.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week, prompting some to call for an independent prosecutor to lead the investigation.

The President's tweets appear to signal a policy of resistance to Mueller's investigation, that will now likely cast a shadow over the beleaguered White House for months if not years to come. Rosenstein said the Mueller appointment was "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome". Turkey has long opposed USA forces working with Kurdish forces.

The No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said he is supportive of investigations in Congress but expressed concern about the "proliferation" of hearings.

Trump's comments come the morning after the Department of Justice appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether the president's campaign operatives colluded with Moscow.

"I believe it hurts our country terribly, because it shows we're a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country", said Trump.

A third senator, Republican Bill Cassidy, said Rosenstein "indicated what Donald Trump has indicated, that Mr. Trump was leaning in that direction" before Rosenstein presented his memo.

President Donald Trump, striking a defiant tone on Thursday after days of political tumult, denied colluding with Russian Federation during his 2016 campaign or asking former FBI Director James Comey to drop a probe into his former national security adviser.

With a special counsel, Congress loses authority in its role in the investigation.

The appointment gives Mueller, who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation through the September 11 terrorist attacks and served under presidential administrations of both parties, sweeping powers to investigate whether Trump campaign associates colluded with the Kremlin to influence the outcome in his behalf, as well as the authority to prosecute any crimes uncovered during the probe.

"It also happens to be a pure excuse for the Democrats having lost the election that they should have easily won, because of the electoral college being slanted so much in their way".

The Senate intelligence committee also asked acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to turn over any notes Comey might have made regarding discussions he had with White House or Justice Department officials about Russia's efforts to influence the election.

Anyone who heard his speech to the Coast Guard the day before the special investigator was named should have known the president was going to fight.
