The day after Flynn was forced out, Trump hosted a meeting with then FBI director James Comey, at which he asked him to call off the investigation targeting Flynn, according to the New York Times.

He later reiterated: "There was no collusion, and everybody - even my enemies have said, there is no collusion". "You already knew the media was out to get us".

Ranking Member Elijah Cummings said he expected Comey to make just one appearance on Capitol Hill despite an invitation to appear before a Senate panel as well.

Last week he told a local TV interviewer: "I think the timing of the firing is indeed suspicious".

"What else will the people generating such drivel and nonsense think of next?" he said.

"We need a great director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No" to a question about whether he had asked the FBI to drop an investigation into his former national security adviser.

Democratic lawmakers have demanded that the Justice Department name a special prosecutor to investigate potential ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. Reports that this information was provided by a USA ally and shared without its knowledge sends a troubling signal to America's allies and partners around the world and may impair their willingness to share intelligence with us in the future.

The allegation was made by Comey himself in a memo he wrote after a meeting in February. While that alone raised many, many eyebrows, the allegation that Trump pressured Comey to ease up on Flynn is, as the New York Times described it, "the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trump's associates and Russian Federation". Trump said to Comey that Flynn was a good guy, to which Comey agreed, the person said. You can have the politics of it and all the rest of that goes into it, it certainly is imperfect.

When Santos was asked if he had any suggestions for Trump on how to weather bad press, he demurred. On Fox News, Sean Hannity warned Wednesday of a "destroy Trump alliance" that is now "aligning to take down President Trump".

During a private conversation in June a year ago, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said: "There's two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump".
