ICC Champions Trophy: Dinesh Karthik replaces Manish Pandey in India squad

Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been called up to India's squad for next month's Champions Trophy, as a replacement of injured Manish Pandey, confirmed the BCCI said on Thursday.

Pandey's injury saw him miss out on Kolkata Knight Riders' victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League [IPL] Eliminator which started on Wednesday but ended past midnight due to a lengthy rain delay.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik will replace the Karnataka player in the 15-member squad.

Karthik, who will soon be celebrating his 32nd birthday, scored 607 runs during Tamil Nadu's victorious Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, including a century in the final. Not just that, he was the second-highest run scorer for his IPL team Gujarat Lions, scoring 361 runs.

Karthik played his last match against Afghanistan at Dhaka in March 5, 2014.

India will go into the tournament as defending champion, and this will also be Virat Kohli's first ICC tournament as captain after taking over the reigns from MS Dhoni.

Having played 23 Tests and 71 ODIs for India, Karthik pipped another glovesman Rishabh Pant, who was also a part of the reserves. Karthik was also a part of the team that visited England in the last edition of the ICC Champions Trophy that was held in the year 2013. They are in Group B with South Africa and Sri Lanka in the eight-team tournament.
