Google is already working with Qualcomm on creating a reference device - a template around which other companies will be able to design their own standalone Daydream VR headsets. And being a Daydream-compatible headset, they will deliver a high-quality VR experience. Yet none of these apps - Google Earth, Tilt Brush or Job Simulator - are available with the Daydream headset.
Daydream was announced at last year's Google I/O event, with only a handful of devices since that have been built ready to use it, including the likes of Google's own Pixel devices, and ASUS' ZenFone AR. It has also been confirmed that Samsung's Galaxy S8 will soon be updated to support the Google Daydream format.
Finally, Google's Expedition VR experience for school is going to get an AR component later this year.
Outside of VR, Bavor announced a new augmented reality initiative called the Visual Positioning System. The latter caught Google's liking and now in standalone Daydream VR headsets, these Qualcomm processors have been integrated with Google's tracking technology. After all, VR is a type of computing experience that requires certain resources. Google's VR headset inside-out positional tracking means that, unlike the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Google's WorldSense VR headsets can operate without external sensor trackers, confirming rumors leading up to Wednesday's reveal. While GPS is great for getting you to the storefront, with VPS your device can direct you right to the item you're looking for once inside.
According to Google, VPS works today in partner museums and select Lowe's stores.
Along with all of the "standard" computer bits to be included, the new headsets will also be packed full of sensors used to detect the outside, real world. "We're thrilled that headsets will begin to hit shelves later this year".
