MP and strongman of Bihar's Saran district Prabhunath Singh and two others were convicted on Thursday in an old murder case by a local court of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand.

Singh later joined hands with the RJD and became an MP from Maharajganj in 2013.

Besides Prabhunath Singh, his brother Dina Nath Singh and former mukhiya Ritesh Singh have also been convicted in the murder case.

The matter relates to era of undivided Bihar when the then MLA of Mashrakh of Bihar, Ashok Singh, was killed by bomb attack on his carcade.

The quantum of sentence will be announced on May 23.

Ashok Singh had defeated Prabhunath Singh in Mashrak assembly constituency election in Bihar in 1995.

The verdict has come as a serious setback to Lalu Prasad as both his trusted men, Prabhunath Singh and Mohammad Shahabuddin, are now being pushed behind the bars. "Prabhunath had openly said that my brother will be killed within 90 days of becoming legislator", Tarkeshwar Singh said. At present, he is with the RJD and is considered close to party chief Lalu Prasad.

Soon after his conviction, Singh was taken into custody and sent to jail. He, however, lost his bid for re-election in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Wife of former legislator of Masrakh Chandani Devi had appealed to the Supreme Court to transfer the case out of Bihar which was shifted to Hazaribagh court.
