Amazon's own services will also feature prominently, including streaming shows and movies through Amazon Video and displaying lyrics to songs played through Amazon Music. It is the latest and smartest speaker with an integrated 7-inch touchscreen and intelligent voice assistant, Alexa.

The official announcement of the recently leaked Amazon Echo with a touchscreen is closer than most expected, with Amazon said to be preparing to unveil the device as soon as Tuesday, May 9.

Video calling is the headline extra feature of the unit and it's been added alongside a new functionality called "Drop In".

While the voice-activated assistant is capable of connecting to devices such as the Philips Hue lighting system, ArsTechnica says it will also be compatible with "smart cameras from Ring and Arlo".

Up to this point, Amazon's Echo devices have been all about voice controls, but the newest addition to the family, the Amazon Echo Show ($229.99 on Amazon), adds visuals and video calling. Echo Show is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with immersive audio powered by Dolby. But if you want Alexa's new calling features on a budget, you can pick up the Echo Dot for just $49.99 or use the free Alexa app for your smartphone or tablet.
