After the capture, Cummins was charged with one federal count of transportations of a minor across state lines for the goal of criminal sexual intercourse, said Jack Smith, acting USA attorney for Middle District of Tennessee. "What happened in California this morning, however, proves it only takes one person to lead to a successful end".

It could take weeks to extradite Cummins, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department in far northern, rural California near OR has confirmed Thursday the vehicle was found. Moments later, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the pair had also been found.

Cummins was a teacher at Thomas's high school in Tennessee and was sacked for inappropriate behaviour with the freshman student after another pupil claimed to have seen the pair kissing.

He was Thomas's high school teacher at Culleoka Unit School in Tennessee. Two days after the girl disappeared, surveillance images from a Walmart in Oklahoma City showed Cummins and the girl purchasing food items in the store with cash, the agency said.

"As soon as she's ready for any help we can offer, we'll be there for her", said 22nd District Attorney General Brent Cooper.

Barry said on Thursday that Cummins and Elizabeth showed up Tuesday.

Interim U.S. Attorney Jack Smith said during a TBI briefing on the case that Cummins has been officially charged by his office with one count of interstate transportation of a minor for the goal of sexual intercourse.

Cummins also told Barry that he was 44-years-old and that Thomas, who called herself Joanna, was 22.

Tad Cummins and student Elizabeth Thomas were tracked down in northern California following a tip-off to police.

"She would come to him about her problems with her past", Jill Cummins said.

"Very happy, very happy", he said.

The pair were found at a commune in the Siskiyou County town of Cecilville after someone spotted the Nissan Rogue that belonged to Cummins, as reported by NBC affiliate KOBI in Medford, Oregon.

Cummins was a teacher at Thomas's high school in Tennessee and was sacked for inappropriate behavior with the freshman student.

"You know you can't hide forever", Jill Cummins said in an interview with NBC News. Cummins told O'Hare's friend that he was 44 years old, the young woman with him was 22 and they were recently married.

Deputies monitored the vehicle and took Cummins into custody as daylight broke, said DeVine.

Cummins is being held without bond at the Siskiyou County Jail, police confirmed. However, the two could have likely been in the area for about a week, according to Siskiyou County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Gilley.

The missing Tennessee teen who was allegedly kidnapped by her former teacher was found in an isolated cabin in northern California after authorities received a tip late Wednesday describing a possible sighting of the pair.

Authorities said Elizabeth was physically unharmed, but they declined to comment on her emotional well-being or where the pair has been since they vanished last month.

Cummins' wife told authorities on March 14 that her husband wanted to get the loan "to meet their financial needs during his suspension from work without pay".

Investigators said they think he manipulated her into leaving with him, but he wasn't authorized to take a minor, and she wasn't old enough to consent.
