NY 2017: Subaru Ascent 7-seat SUV concept premieres

Beyond the large shoulders and butch grille, the new Subaru Ascent will feature three rows of seating inside and a 7-passenger configuration with second-row captain's chairs to be available.

It follows on from Subaru's VIZIV-7 Concept revealed past year at the LA Motor Show.

In terms of dimensions, the Ascent concept checks in at 198.8 inches long, 78.3 inches wide and 72.4 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 117 inches. But since this is still a concept, we won't know all the details about the production model until it's ready to debut.

Dimensionally, the Ascent concept is smaller than the massive Viziv-7.

The Subaru Ascent is officially unveiled at the 2017 NY motor show, and a US-only production model will go on sale in 2018. Look beyond the auto show glitz, however, and you find the core styling of the new Subaru Ascent, which will be headed to dealerships in 2018.

Subaru of America, Inc., which this month posted its 64th consecutive month of record-breaking sales, made the world debut of the Subaru Ascent SUV Concept. It will also feature a turbocharged Boxer engine.

The production version of the Ascent will arrive next year and will be built in IN, according to Tom Doll, president and chief operating officer of Subaru USA. WRX enthusiasts are always clamoring for more power and less turbo-lag, and a modified version of the new engine would seem like a fairly obvious candidate.

Still, it's a handsome SUV, and Subaru continues to sell well to a devoted audience. The Ascent will be built exclusively in Indiana.
