The school was evacuated after the shooting and students were bused to the campus of California State University at San Bernardino to be briefed and interviewed by authorities.

The New York Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/2pqHT7s ) Tuesday that Natalie Anderson filed for the restraining order against her then-husband Cedric Anderson in Los Angeles in 1996. She didn't take him seriously and thought he was just seeking attention, he said.

"You know, it's not a scary place to be, and just kind of help him process more and re-experience what happened to hopefully make this as healthy and experience as can be given the circumstances", Gutierrez said.

The couple divorced in 1997.

"A woman is shot and killed by her partner every 16 hours".

As a memorial continued to grow on the sidewalk outside of the elementary school, parents and colleagues remembered Smith as a dedicated educator who cared deeply for her students and was devoted to education. "Her whole life was surrounded around kids and helping them, and helping them build a future".

A gunman had walked into a North Park Elementary School classroom of special needs children Monday morning and opened fire on his wife, a teacher there, and then killed himself, police said.

Gun control activist Shannon Watts, who founded Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America following the Newtown shooting, said her group will continue to push for regulation on gun access rather than metal detectors as a solution.

Eight-year-old Jonathan Martinez was airlifted to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Security camera footage shows him walking around the perimeter of the school, trying to open doors that were locked, before walking to the front office to check in, San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Dale Marsden said.

Children with the syndrome tend to have striking verbal abilities and an affinity for music, Marsden said.

"By all accounts, Jonathan Martinez was a happy child", Marsden said at a news conference.

He wanted the boy to see the flowers, the candles, the balloons, the love shown to his friend, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, and the teacher who was also killed.

A 9-year-old classmate also struck by gunfire in stable condition, in good spirits and watching cartoons at a hospital, Marsden said.

A candlelight vigil is planned for the victims Tuesday evening at North Park Elementary.

Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters Tuesday that Cedric Anderson had accused Karen Smith of infidelity in their short marriage.

Anderson, a self-proclaimed pastor whose Facebook profile is filled with Bible quotes and religious references, had been unemployed but previously held jobs as a maintenance worker, police said.

Smith's loved ones told investigators that she had said she was concerned about her husband's odd behavior and that he had made threats against her, but not to shoot her. Burguan said the couple had been married briefly and had been separated for about a month or month and a half.

Police say Anderson, 53, had previous domestic violence allegations against him, but it's unclear what Smith experienced.

Anderson had threatened his wife multiple times but did not specifically say he would shoot her, Burguan said.

As details emerged, it was clear the shooting was domestic violence, not terrorism - another awful day in a wave of mayhem that has shaken the city as much as the December 2015 mass shooting.

The police chief also said a note believed to be from Anderson had been found that talked about needing closure and feeling disrespected.

Mayor Carey Davis said he had spoken about the shooting to White House officials who said President Donald Trump expressed "concern for students and teachers" at North Park.

Grief counselors were on hand Tuesday to support students, parents and staff.

It is not certain if Anderson was given permission to enter his wife's classroom or if he went to the classroom surreptitiously.
