San Bernardino schools increased security after the 2015 terrorist attack, but it's hard to believe they could have stopped Anderson.

"No one has come forward to say they saw this coming", Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said, though Anderson had a history of weapons, domestic violence and possible drug charges that predated the brief marriage. But after the two Wednesday, a different side of Anderson emerged, Sykes told the paper.

She added: "Schools are supposed to be safe havens, and tragedies like today's are becoming far too commonplace in our society".

" [My daughter] said she was a sweet, sweet lady".

"She thought she had a wonderful husband, but she found out he was not wonderful at all", Sykes told the Los Angeles Times. "He had other motives".

Anderson, a self-proclaimed pastor whose Facebook profile is filled with Bible quotes and religious references, had been unemployed but previously held jobs as a maintenance worker, police said. "She was shocked, like 'What happened?' He was so kind to her while they were dating".

The newspaper said Natalie Anderson said Cedric had talked her into abandoning the restraining order. "Well, it makes a happy marriage".

The page also had several photos of his wedding to Smith and their honeymoon among the scenic red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. Anderson was charged in 2013 with assault and battery, brandishing a firearm and disturbing the peace, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Police said Karen Smith and 8-year-old student Jonathan Martinez were killed in the shooting Monday at North Park Elementary School.

Smith and one of her students were fatally shot Monday at North Park Elementary School by Cedric Anderson, who also wounded another little boy before killing himself.

Students at North Park Elementary School which has around 500 students between kindergarten and sixth grade were transported to a nearby campus, where they were "being well cared for, having snacks, playing games and watching a Disney movie", the police department tweeted.

Smith's mother, Irma Sykes, said her daughter had been friends with Anderson for about four years before they got married.

Jeffrey said students got out of their chairs and ran outside with their teacher when they heard gunshots. Officials said out of context, the note would not have been suspicious. She is originally from one of the islands of Stockholm, Sweden. "She would never put the lives of her students in danger", Adam Smith told NBC 4 Los Angeles.

The 9-year-old boy who was wounded and remains unidentified was shot in the upper body, but was "doing better", according to Dale Marsden, the San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent.

The 600 other students at the school were bused to safety at California State University's San Bernardino campus, several miles away, after many walked off campus hand-in-hand, escorted by police.

Cabreras has two young children at North Park, and an older daughter was taught by Smith for two years at a nearby high school. She said the long wait was "frustrating but also understandable". The school will remain closed until April 16, Marsden said.

The ex-wife of a Navy veteran sought a restraining order against him after he threatened to kill her and her children and then take his own life years before he opened fire at a San Bernardino elementary school, killing his new wife and a student in a murder-suicide. Husband-and-wife shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were later killed in a gunbattle with authorities.
