North Korea attempts but fails to launch missile - South Korea

No nuke test marked the holiday as feared, but the country did attempt to launch a missile from its eastern coast the following day.

"The president and his military team are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch. The president has no further comment".

Recently the US began installing a missile defense system in South Korea that has produced protests from China, which sees North Korea as a useful buffer between it and USA ally South Korea.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted again that the USA, along with its allies, was prepared to deal with North Korea. "If they are unable to do so, the US, with its allies, will!" he tweeted Thursday.

Trump has ordered a navy strike group flagshipped by a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to head to the region as a show of force as his officials assess tougher economic sanctions as well as military options against the North.

The launch comes just a day after the Pyongyang regime showcased its might in a massive military parade to mark the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's founding father Kim Il-sung.

Washington and Seoul will try hard to figure out what exactly North Korea fired.

North Korea has not yet released any statement over the launch, but it is well-known that the hermit kingdom rarely admits to missile failures.

The statement Sunday said it wasn't clear what kind of missile was involved.

The North has in turn warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked.
