USPACOM is fully committed to working closely with its allies in the Republic of Korea and in Japan to maintain security, Benham said.

The failed launch came hours before Vice President Mike Pence was scheduled to land in South Korea.

North Korea launched a long-range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests a year ago, including its most powerful to date.

The vice president spoke at a dinner after attending Easter church services with service members at the garrison. South Korean officials suspect the missile launched on Sunday could be of the same type. South Korean news agency Yonhap quoted experts as saying that North Korea unveiled a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during the parade, one that appeared longer than existing KN-08 or KN-14 ICBMs. On April 11, he tweeted that "North Korea is looking for trouble", and said China's help would be welcomed, but that the US was prepared to solve the problem without Beijing, which has served a the North's economic lifeline.

The U.S. Pacific Command said the missile "blew up nearly immediately", adding the type of missile was being analysed.

China, the only country with leverage over its neighbor to the south, has warned both the US and North Korea to lower their aggressive rhetoric.

No planned response is expected from the Trump administration because the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the administration's initial understanding of the launch, said there was no need for the U.S.to reinforce the failure. "We will take all the actions we have, regardless of whether the USA provokes us with full-scale war or nuclear war".

North Korea has spent decades trying to develop operational nuclear weapons.

Seeing as China is North Korea's only major ally, speculation has swirled over China's job in mediating USA and North Korean tensions. His visit comes just after a failed missile launch by the North.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted again that the USA, along with its allies, was prepared to deal with North Korea. "If they are unable to do so, the US, with its allies, will!" he tweeted Thursday.

Trump has ordered a navy strike group flagshipped by a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to head to the region as a show of force as his officials assess tougher economic sanctions as well as military options against the North.

The launch comes just a day after the Pyongyang regime showcased its might in a massive military parade to mark the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's founding father Kim Il-sung.

Washington and Seoul will try hard to figure out what exactly North Korea fired.

North Korea has not yet released any statement over the launch, but it is well-known that the hermit kingdom rarely admits to missile failures.

The statement Sunday said it wasn't clear what kind of missile was involved.

The North has in turn warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked.
